Kinross Gold and Trout Unlimited launch second conservation project under the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative
Kinross Gold Corp (KGC)
Kinross Gold is excited to announce we have teamed up with Trout Unlimited to further our partnership under the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative by launching our second project – the Cripple Creek Restoration Project.
Cripple Creek is a tributary to the Chena River located in Alaska and once served as a productive rearing stream for juvenile Chinook (king) salmon. During mining in the 1930s, the creek was impacted by operations that lacked the environmental standards and regulations of the present day. It has since benefitted from efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Interior Alaska Land Trust (IALT), which aim to restore this once-productive juvenile salmon rearing stream.

To further these efforts that have spanned over 20 years, Kinross Gold and Trout Unlimited have selected Cripple Creek as the second project of the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative, encouraging partnership, collaboration and a shared vision of restoration between local communities, Indigenous partners, conservation organizations, and industry.
On August 11, Kinross Gold and Trout Unlimited celebrated the launch of the project by hosting a dedication ceremony in Fairbanks, Alaska, which included leadership from both organizations, as well as Alaska State Senator Mike Cronk, and U.S. Congressman Nick Begich, who both provided remarks at the event in support of the project and the partnership.
Kinross Gold CEO Paul Rollinson also spoke at the event to share Kinross’ sustainability vision in Alaska, highlighting our commitment to restoration, environmental stewardship and partnership
“The next phase of the Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative is so meaningful to us because it brings together sustainable mining, conservation, and the kind of long-term partnership that has defined our work with Trout Unlimited for more than a decade,” said Paul Rollinson, CEO. “Seeing the positive impact of these projects first-hand is rewarding to all of us at Kinross, and is a testament to our commitment to sustainable development. We are proud to be part of Alaska’s story, and we look forward to continuing this important work together.”
The Alaska Abandoned Mine Restoration Initiative is the first partnership of its kind in Alaska, which includes a non-profit conservation organization and a major mining company working side-by-side to restore important fish habitat and to mitigate the impacts of historic mining. The Initiative launched in 2021 with its first project – Resurrection Creek – that aims to rebuild the historic wildlife and fish habitat at the Creek located in Hope, Alaska.
“We've worked hard to demonstrate that responsible mining is about more than producing minerals. It's about creating long-term value for communities, protecting the environment, and leaving a positive legacy,” said Anna Atchison, Director, External Affairs USA. “This Initiative, which we aim to replicate in other areas of operation, reflects those values.”
