Kinross Brazil celebrates literature and community as title sponsor of ‘Fliparacatu’
Kinross Gold Corp (K)
This summer, Kinross Brazil was proud to be named the title sponsor of the fourth International Literary Festival of Paracatu – ‘Fliparacatu’ – held in the historic centre of the city.
The festival is the largest literary festival in Paracatu, bringing together writers, journalists, artists, researchers, students, families and community organizations to explore education, literature and the historic culture of Paracatu through reading and writing.
The theme for this year’s edition was ‘Sertão em Nós: Meu Lugar no Mundo,’ which translates to ‘The Hinterlands Within Us: My Place in the World’. The theme paid tribute to two senior Brazilian intellectual figures – João Guimarães Rosa and Milton Santos – focusing on themes such as identity, belonging, territory, memory, democracy, environment, cities, technology and the social transformation of the city of Paracatu.
Over the four-day festival, more than 32,500 community members attended events to celebrate the importance of literature in telling the story of Paracatu, and how this influence can be incorporated into community initiatives to further strengthen the role literature plays in local storytelling. The festival concluded with a concert headlined by the Ouro Preto Orchestra that honoured the life and career of João Bosco, one of the most influential writers in Brazil.
The festival remains a valuable opportunity to strengthen the role of literature in the community, and Kinross was proud to play a notable role by supporting the event from both a financial and volunteer perspective, dedicating staff to participate and helping to fund several of the events and performances that took place.
“Kinross Paracatu was honoured to be a part of the fourth edition of Fliparacatu as our participation demonstrates our commitment to connecting the broader community and strengthening the long-term development of Paracatu,” said Danielle de Paula, Communications and Communities Manager, Paracatu.
