How to Research a Stock Before Earnings With ChatGPT or Claude

A six-prompt workflow for the days before a company reports, run on SoundHound (SOUN) before its November 5 results: the report date, the analyst consensus, management's guidance, last quarter's call, the options-implied move and short interest.

How to Research a Stock Before Earnings With ChatGPT or Claude

Most of what you want to know before a company reports is already public, but it sits in six places: the investor relations calendar, the analyst consensus, last quarter's guidance and earnings call, the options market and FINRA's short interest file. With Equibles connected to ChatGPT or Claude, you can ask for each one in plain English and get an answer that cites its source.

This guide walks through the six prompts we use before a report, run on SoundHound AI (SOUN $4.09 -3.08%), which reports Q3 2026 results on November 5. Every answer below is real tool output from November 3, 2026.

Before you start

Connect the Equibles MCP server to your assistant once: ChatGPT setup or Claude setup. After that, the assistant picks the right tool on its own; you never type a tool name.

1. When does it report?

When does SoundHound report its Q3 2026 results, and when is the call?

The assistant calls GetUpcomingInvestorEvents, which reads the company's own investor relations calendar:

  • SoundHound Q3 2026 Earnings Conference Call: November 5, 2026, 22:00 UTC, which is 5:00 p.m. Eastern, after the market closes.

The answer links the event page on SoundHound's investor site, so you can confirm the time at the source. The same calendar is on SoundHound's investor relations page.

2. What does the Street expect?

What revenue and EPS do analysts expect for SoundHound's Q3, and has the consensus moved?

GetAnalystEstimates returns the consensus with the date it was captured, here October 29:

  • Revenue: $62.18 million on average from 6 analysts, with a range of $59.71 million to $64.50 million.
  • EPS: a loss of $0.05 from 5 analysts, with a range of -$0.09 to $0.00. Ninety days ago the average was a loss of $0.038, and one analyst lowered their estimate in the last week.

Always ask for the snapshot date. A consensus captured before a big announcement can be stale by the time the company reports. The full table is on SoundHound's analyst estimates page.

3. What did management promise, and has anything changed since?

What revenue guidance has SoundHound given for 2026, what does it leave for the second half, and has anything happened since that changes it? Use reported quarterly revenue.

This prompt makes the assistant combine GetGuidance, GetFinancialStatement and GetInvestorRelationsNews, and do the arithmetic:

  • On August 5, management raised its 2026 revenue guidance to $230 million to $260 million, from $225 million to $260 million in May, and repeated $350 million to $400 million for 2027.
  • First-half revenue was $106.1 million: $44.2 million in Q1 and $61.9 million in Q2, from the 10-Qs. So the second half needs $123.9 million to $153.9 million.
  • On September 4, SoundHound completed its acquisition of LivePerson, which booked $52.5 million of revenue in Q2 on its own. On the August call, the CEO said the outlook would be updated to include LivePerson once the deal closed, so the guidance above leaves it out.

That last point changes how to read the quarter. Reported Q3 revenue will include 27 days of LivePerson, while the $62.2 million consensus from step 2 is barely above SoundHound's own $61.9 million in Q2. Before you compare the result with the consensus, ask whether the analysts behind it have added the deal.

"Has anything happened since the guidance?" is worth asking for every company: acquisitions, divestitures and share sales land in 8-Ks between earnings calls. The assistant shows where each figure came from, so you can check the arithmetic line by line. The quarterly figures are on SoundHound's financials page.

4. What happened last quarter?

Summarize SoundHound's last earnings call: what went well, what didn't, and the key quotes.

GetEarningsBrief returns a sourced summary of the Q2 call held on August 5:

  • Went well: record revenue of $61.9 million, up 45% from a year earlier, and GAAP gross margin up 6 points to 45.1%.
  • Didn't: a GAAP net loss of $42.8 million, general and administrative costs up 43% on acquisition fees, and cash down $45.7 million in the quarter to $203 million, with no debt.
  • Quote: "With the strong first half of the year, we are increasing our revenue expectations to be in the range of $230 million to $260 million." James Hom, CFO.

When a line needs context, ask for the transcript itself, or read the SoundHound Q2 2026 earnings call by speaker.

5. How big a move are options pricing?

What move are SoundHound options pricing for the earnings report? Use the first expiry after the report.

The assistant calls GetOptionExpirations to find the first expiry after November 5, which is Friday, November 6, then GetOptionChain for that date:

  • With the stock at $4.15 on the morning of November 3, the $4.00 call was quoted at $0.30 to $0.36 and the $4.00 put at $0.17 to $0.21.
  • Buying both costs about $0.52 at the midpoints, about 12.5% of the share price. That is the move, in either direction, the options market is pricing by Friday.
  • Implied volatility on those two contracts was about 172%, much of it the report itself.

Options quotes change all day, so ask for the quote time; every quote in the chain is timestamped. The full chain is on SoundHound's options chain page. Options chains and intraday quotes need a paid plan (pricing).

6. Who is betting against it?

How much SoundHound stock is sold short, and how has that changed this year?

GetShortInterest returns FINRA's twice-monthly short interest history:

  • 170.8 million shares were sold short at the October 15 settlement, up 11.9 million in two weeks and up from 110.8 million at the end of 2025.
  • That is 10.1 days of average volume to cover, up from 4.2 at the end of July, because trading volume fell while the short position grew.

FINRA publishes each settlement about a week and a half after it, so check the date before reading it as today's position. The history is on SoundHound's short interest page.

Put it together in one prompt

Once you have seen each piece work, ask for all of it at once:

Build me an earnings prep sheet for SoundHound's Q3 2026 report: the date and call time, the analyst consensus with its date, management's 2026 guidance and what it leaves for the second half, anything filed since that changes it, a summary of last quarter's call, the options-implied move for the first expiry after the report, and the latest short interest. Cite the source and date of every number.

To go further, ask what analysts pressed management on during the last call, or how the stock moved after each of the last eight reports. Our own forecast for the quarter, with the model behind it, is in the SoundHound Q3 2026 earnings preview.

How to check what the assistant tells you

  • Every Equibles tool returns its source with the answer: the 8-K or 10-Q, the call, the FINRA settlement date, the consensus snapshot time. Ask "where does that number come from?" and follow the link.
  • Watch the dates. A week-old consensus, or short interest from the last settlement, is still useful if you know how old it is.
  • Do the arithmetic yourself the first time, as in step 3, then let the assistant do it from then on.

The same six prompts work for any US-listed company with a report coming up: swap the name and the quarter. Add Equibles to ChatGPT or Claude to run them on your own watchlist.
