“Next Estimate” is a model estimate of the short position FINRA will report for the September 15, 2026 settlement, built from daily short-volume data published since the last settlement — not FINRA data, and not a forecast of the price. The second line is the implied move against the last reported position. A stock shows “—” when the model has no estimate for it: too little daily volume, a stock split inside the pending window, or a position FINRA has already published. Estimates are included with Plus and above.
Red is a rising short position (more bearish bets), green is short covering. “% of Shares Out” is the current short position divided by shares outstanding — a proxy for short interest as a percentage of float, since free-float figures aren't available. It can exceed 100% when more shares are shorted than the reported share count. Stocks with no shares-outstanding figure, or one implausibly small against the short position, rank last on the percentage metrics and show “—”. Positions either side of a stock split are restated onto today's share basis before the change is computed, so a reverse split never prints as a covering wave. A first-reported position counts fully as an increase. Listings with no reported trading volume, or a short position under 10,000 shares, are left out: with no volume every ratio here is undefined, and a position that small is reporting residue rather than one anyone chose to take, so every percentage built on it rounds to zero. “Days to Cover” shows “999+” where the true ratio runs past FINRA's cap. By default the list shows companies with a market cap of at least $50M — set “Min market cap” to “Any” for the full universe, including stocks with no market-cap figure on file.
What this ranking measures
Short interest is the number of shares sold short and not yet covered, as reported by the brokerage firms carrying the positions. It is a snapshot of one moment, not a running total, and it counts shares rather than traders or dollars.
The ranking sorts on the short position as a percentage of shares outstanding rather than on the raw share count, because a million shares short means something very different for a company with ten million shares than for one with a billion. The raw position, the previous position and the change between them are all on the table beside it.
Positions either side of a stock split are restated onto today's share basis before the change is computed. Without that a reverse split prints as a covering wave that never happened, and a forward split prints as a wave of new shorting.
How to read days to cover
Days to cover is the short position divided by the stock's average daily trading volume: the number of days of ordinary trading it would take to buy back every shorted share. It is what makes a large position on a heavily traded stock comparable to a smaller one on a quiet stock.
It is a measure of crowding, not of direction. A high figure says that if the shorts did decide to close, they could not do it quickly, which is the mechanism behind a squeeze. It says nothing about whether they will, and short sellers are frequently right.
Positions under 10,000 shares and listings with no reported volume are left out entirely, because every ratio on this page is undefined without them.
When this page updates
FINRA collects short interest twice a month and publishes it seven trading days after the settlement date it measures: firms have two trading days to file their positions and FINRA disseminates the file five trading days after that. In calendar terms the data is nine to twelve days old on the day it appears.
That lag is a property of the data rather than of this page: nobody has a more current official short interest figure, because FINRA has not published one yet. The settlement date shown above the table is the date the positions were measured, and the selector reaches every settlement already published.
Frequently asked questions
Can short interest be more than 100% of shares outstanding?
Yes. A borrowed share can be sold short, bought by someone else, then borrowed and sold short again, so the shares sold short can exceed the shares the company has issued. The figure on this page divides the reported short position by shares outstanding rather than by free float, because free-float counts are not available, and a company whose shares are mostly held by insiders will read higher on that basis than on float.
What does 999+ days to cover mean?
It means the ratio runs past the cap FINRA publishes rather than that the figure was measured at 999. Days to cover is the short position divided by average daily trading volume, so a stock that barely trades produces an enormous ratio, and past a point the number stops carrying information beyond "far more than anyone could buy back quickly".
Why does a stock show a dash instead of a percentage?
Because the figure that percentage needs is missing or not credible, and a blank is the honest answer where a zero would read as a measurement. A stock has no shares outstanding figure on file, or one implausibly small against its reported short position. Those stocks rank last on the percentage metrics rather than being dropped, so the position itself is still visible.
Which stocks are left out of this ranking?
Listings with no reported trading volume, and short positions under 10,000 shares. With no volume every ratio here is undefined, and a position that small is reporting residue rather than a position anyone chose to take, so every percentage built on it rounds to zero. The ranking also defaults to companies worth at least $50 million, which the market cap filter turns off.
