Portfolios and watchlists

A portfolio tracks what you hold, what it cost and how it has done. A watchlist is a portfolio with no holdings: the same page, used to watch prices. Both are on every plan, Free included.

Create a portfolio

Open Portfolios and click New portfolio (a + button once you have one). Give it a name, such as Main or IRA, pick the currency its totals are reported in, and click Create.

  • Up to 10 portfolios per account.
  • Up to 200 lots per portfolio, open and closed together, and 200 watched instruments.
  • Names must be unique within your account.
  • The currency can be USD, EUR, GBP, CHF, DKK, NOK, SEK, CNY or HKD; change it later under Name and currency.

Add holdings

Add holding opens a dialog with three tabs:

  • Stock: the stock, Bought or Sold short, shares, price per share in the stock's trading currency (London prices in pounds, not pence), date and an optional note. A stock on another exchange appears in the list as its exchange code and ticker, such as XPAR:AIR for Airbus in Paris. For a stock in another currency than the portfolio's, you can add the exchange rate from your broker's confirmation; leave it empty to use the official rate on that date.
  • Option: find the contract, then Bought or Sold (wrote), contracts, premium per share, date opened and an optional note. The contract finder shows bid and ask 15 minutes delayed on Plus and in real time on Pro.
  • Watch: follow a stock or option contract without holding it.

Expand a holding to see its lots; each lot has Edit, Close and remove buttons. Close records the closing price, date and quantity; closing part of a lot keeps the rest at its original cost. Removing a lot deletes it, while closing it keeps its realized result.

How it is valued

  • Each holding is valued in the currency it trades in. Totals are in the portfolio's currency: cost converts at the rate on the purchase date (or your broker's rate), value at the latest official rate, and the page names that rate and its date.
  • A holding with no official rate into the portfolio's currency is named and left out of the totals rather than converted at a guessed rate.
  • A stock on another exchange is valued at its latest closing price, never a live quote.
  • The value history and dividends are in the portfolio's currency: each day's closing value converts at that day's official rate, a dividend received at the rate on its ex-date, and a forecast dividend at today's. Outside US dollars the return includes currency moves, and the S&P 500 comparison is restated the same way.
  • A day with no official rate is skipped and a dividend with none is left out and counted; neither is converted at another day's rate.
  • Dividend amounts per share stay in the currency the stock pays in.
  • Stocks use the settled daily close, replaced by a live quote when that quote is from a newer trading session.
  • Options use the contract's daily close. Expired contracts are not priced.
  • Quantities and costs stay exactly as you entered them and are never restated for a stock split.
  • The summary shows portfolio value, total return (price, realized and dividends), time-weighted return, cost basis, unrealized and realized gains, and dividends received.

Watch without holding

  • Watched instruments show a price but are never added to the portfolio's value.
  • On a US stock page, the Watch button adds or removes the stock in any portfolio you own.
  • Watching alone sends no email. Turn on alerts below.

Alerts

Get alerts, available to the portfolio's creator, emails you about every company in the portfolio, including ones you add later:

  • New SEC filings: when a company in the portfolio files.
  • Upcoming earnings: once, when a scheduled earnings call is less than 24 hours away.

See Email alerts for delivery and how to manage them.

Analyze, export and share

  • Analyze in screener opens the stock screener with the US stocks you hold and watch, so you can compare them on any metric.
  • Download CSV, in the ⋮ menu, exports the portfolio's lots. Watched instruments are not included.
  • In an organization, Share with organization makes a portfolio viewable or editable by your colleagues. Only its creator can rename, delete or reshare it.

From your AI or code

The same portfolios are available through the portfolio MCP tools, so you can ask your assistant to log a trade or report P&L, and through the portfolio REST endpoints.
